Oaktown/Oak Trees

A love letter to Oakland

These works start with the silhouettes of the Oak Trees that are my companions in my studio and on park trails. The first marks are painted with clear water, drawn from images photographed and sketched at home and on Huckleberry Trail.

The repetitive dots are something else entirely. Something more. Something literal, something figurative, something metaphoric and something in between. The dots symbolize much: particulates that choke our air when wildfires rage, each individual human who died from Covid, the snowflakes and rain that fall from atmospheric rivers parked over the Bay Area for days then leave us dry for months, to my people who show up again and again. The dots hold memories of the matriarchs, my babies, and all the successes and challenges of this life.

The color are an invited accident, selected by a friend or happenstance and because I have them. I am on a quest to consume all the materials I possess, making art and meaning while finishing them all.
